Wolves Video/Training Details

First of all, a big thank you to everyone who came down and found us at the Sports Fair and everyone who came down to the taster session on Tuesday. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and hope to see you all at our upcoming training sessions!

For those of you who were not at the Sports Fair, the recruitment video can now be seen HERE.

The Wolves recruit all year round, so even if you missed the Tuesday taster session, there is still an opportunity to meet us on Sunday 9th October at 11:30am at Costcutter on campus for training at University House field for a 12 start. Bring moulded or metal studs (depending on the weather), sports kit, a gum shield, and, if you did not pick up a barcode and pay at the Sports Fair, £6 from everyone who wants to train in full pads to cover Warwick Sport insurance (you need to bring this money if you want to play in pads).

After Sunday, training will resume normal times at 7-9:30pm on Tuesdays at Westwood Games Hall and 12-3pm on Sundays at University House Field.

Hope to see you all there and (hopefully) get you hitting things!

Warwick Tournament a success

This weekend saw Warwick host the first ever BUAFL National Flag-Football Tournament.

The day started with a match-up between the Warwick Wolverines Women and Coventry Jets Ladies (not to be confused with the CU Jets Ladies!).

Warwick’s offence was slow to start and a deep pass was picked off by Tendai Cheiza and returned for Coventry’s opening touch-down. A second pick-return by Tendai just before the half saw the Wolverines trailing 13-0 at the break.

Warwick’s offence got a solid run and short-passing game going though and gave Coventry quite a few scares. They just couldn’t quite find that killer-play. Similarly, Coventry’s offence was consistently moving the ball, but couldn’t put that third score in.

Both defences seemed to have adjusted and be on top of things but a break-away, pitch-long run by Tendai saw Coventry score the only offensive touch-down of the game.

Final Score: Coventry 20 – Warwick 0.

Despite the score-line the Wolverines showed just how far they had come since their formation just five months ago. Their defensive play was much improved, their tackling and reading of the game especially, and their offence showed the strong foundations they have to build on next year.

Then the National Tournament began.

With exams and varying term times only five university teams were fielded – one from York and four from Warwick – but it proved to be an exciting and competitive day regardless, and was enjoyed by all involved!

Results:

5th Place: Leeroy Jenkins

A team of line-men, Leeroy Jenkins were sturdy and determined in their performance – the only team not to lose to the Juggernauts. Despite making steady yards, and some very solid defensive play, inconsistency would plague them. This ultimately led to too many deep plays and picks being given up.

From Left to Right: Steve Joyce, Alex Marsden, Luke Selzer, Demi Omisakin, James Wilson, Marcus Cross

4th Place: Wolverines Mixed

The Wolverines were the only mixed team in the competition and all credit should go to the girls for showing the boys what they were made of. In spite of flashes of dynamic and exciting offensive and defensive play, they were prone to lapses in concentration on both sides of the ball. Speedy runs and flea-flickers, as well as multiple picks, saw them overcome Leeroy Jenkins to keep them off the bottom of the table.

From left to right: George Whitworth, Simon Kroll, Anna Gruber, Philip Gaydon, Heather James, Reem Brooks, Liam Fishwick, Rebecca Smith, Pete Coppenhall

3rd Place: Eddie’s Boys

Eddie’s Boys put in an all-round solid performance for most of the tournament, consistently making yards and defending resolutely. Their points average was hampered by an inability to break the Juggernaut’s defence, and a slight crumbling under a sustained York attack, but they can be very happy with a well-deserved, mid-table finish.

From left to right: Alex Eddie, Chris Hill, Rackesh Patel, Wayne Drew, Dave O'Connor, Conor Durham

2nd Place: York

The only travelling team, they can be proud to go away with the silver medals! Their quick and athletic receivers deserved to put up the most points in the tournament, and their agile defence were stingy against all but the Juggernauts. Perhaps if they had found their stride earlier, after their long journey, they could have won the ultimately deciding opening game!

Due to injury, the York team arrived with only four players – they were supplemented with a fifth mystery player. After asking around no-one actually seems to know his full name, or where he appeared from. All we know is that flags were attracted to his nimble hands as if magnetised. If anyone knows this man, please tell him to get in touch and give us his full name!

From left to right: Tom Lee, Mark Brennan, Ben Sheldon, Tom Goddard, Mystery Player

1st Place: Juggernauts

Any team who can give up only two scores in four games of flag football are worthy champions! A team of Warwick ex-house-mates, their offensive play was slickly executed, and their defence resolute. Apart from a slight stumbling upon the stubborn Leeroy Jenkins, they ground down their opponents. Three wins with a draw, rather than a loss, was enough to see them edge the plate off York to become the first ever National Flag-Football Champions.

From left to right: Ben Lewis, Dave Boyles, Lee Atkins, Sam Reynolds, Joseph Francombe

Captain Dave Boyles wanted to say: “The whole tournament was extremely well organised, with a great spirit of competition and fun. It was great to win – and it was a win for our coach, Sean McGuire, who was sadly missed on the day.”

Event organisers, Pete Coppenhall and Philip Gaydon, said they were very happy with the way the event went. “We want to extend our thanks to everybody who gave up their time to make today happen, and we hope the players enjoyed it just as much as we did!”

“Obviously it would have been nice to have a few more different universities here, but an event like this is all about setting up interest. Next year the other universities will know there is a summer tournament happening with some silverware available!”

Final table:

Team Won Lost Draw Pts Scored Conceded PD
1st Juggernauts 3 0 1 10 51 12 +39
2nd York 3 1 0 9 65 33 +32
