Wolves mauled by Lions
Birmingham Lions 62 @ Warwick Wolves 0
Despite their best efforts the Wolves could not stand up to a well-drilled, powerful Birmingham team this weekend. The Lions looked like a team on top having gone undefeated so far this year. The Wolves however were a team tired and injured after a long, hard, inconsistent season. They dug in and never let their heads drop but they swung between bursts of excellence and sloppy basics from play to play. They stopped strong runs and long passes only to give up easy gains after missed tackles. They made good catches and solid blocks only to throw interceptions and allow sacks. Birmingham capitalised on every mistake and put in their 62 points steadily throughout the game.
Head coach Phil Rodgers said that the coaching staff couldn’t be prouder of the team though. “We put in a 100% effort like we always do. We now know just how far we have to climb next year to be a playoff-contending team.” The Wolves have a week off to bring themselves back up to full strength before they turn their minds toward the first ever Varsity game against Coventry University on March 14th. Then the long wait begins for the start of the next season.

Warwick Wolves – A pack ravaged by inconsistency
BNU Buccaneers 28 @ Warwick Wolves 0
The Wolves knew a game against BNU was always going to be a hard slog and yet in the opening minutes their heads just did not seem in the game. BNU quickly pushed in two touchdowns and shut down Warwick’s offence. After that quick jolt the Wolves defence seemed to step up. They hit back hard and began forcing fumbles and gang-tackling well. However, they switched off again allowing BNU to find another breakaway touchdown in the second quarter. The offence did a lot of the same, swinging from powerful drives and solid passing to unforced fumbles and interceptions. And so at the end of the first half the score stood at 22-0.
The second half started well as Warwick’s defence adjusted and fired themselves up, ripping the ball and hunting for tackles. The offence too seemed to find a bit of added vigour. And yet it lulled again as tackling became sloppy, crucial stops weren’t made, wrong routes were run and catches were missed. Then in the fourth quarter, BNU found a final bit of momentum and capitalised on the Wolves’ mistakes forcing in their fourth touchdown and ending the game 28-0.
As the Wolves took a knee after the game there was no doubt they were hurting. There were no words said that every player didn’t already know; they could do better. The coaches did want to congratulate Josh Tiwana on a good performance though. He chased down his tackles and played hard for the whole game. Head coach Phil Rodgers summed up the general feeling: “If we had put in the kind of performance I know we are capable of, and have shown before, we would have won. We are the better team.” It is this thought the Wolves must take forward to face the two toughest teams in the division; Reading Knights and defending national champions Birmingham Lions.
